Program Values & Norms
Atlas’ consciousness is not plagued by the fact that HIV exists, but how we respond to this epidemic. We understand that a cadre of factors (such as misinformation of HIV-related knowledge, substance use, and prevention burnout) contributes to increased rates of HIV infection among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. We recognize that men are employing ever-changing tactics to prevent HIV transmission. However, too many of our brothers are still becoming infected with HIV. We know that we must unite to protect the spread of HIV/AIDS and to improve the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS.
Atlas’ program values and norms reflect building a welcoming and respectful environment that invites gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men to support personal awareness, responsibility, and service.
“I’ve always thought that prevention needed to start before the critical moment of needing to use a condom or not, something that is pre-defined, a value, like self-esteem.”
