History of Atlas
In 2006, The MSM Prevention Program of Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) embarked on a journey to better understand the local community’s perceptions of HIV. During this community assessment, BCAP gathered what would become the seeds of new HIV prevention programming serving gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in BCAP’s service area of Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, and Gilpin Counties. In January 2007, seventeen gay and bisexual men met in a private residence and began discussions to determine program branding and prevention priorities.
Fundamental to Atlas is that we all need a “road map” to help us navigate a sense of self and intentional behaviors that support health and wellness. We realize that our men are connected to a complex history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and that support services are needed for many men to divert HIV transmission.
“I remember being involved with the initial process of establishing Atlas, from the graphic design process to the branding of the program. Atlas has provided me the context to volunteer as a mentor and teacher, which I’ve appreciated.”
